A working box of preventatives (aka condoms) for your fertile Sims.
Buy the box (it can be found under Misc/Misc or in the Bedroom/Bathroom categories) and place it on a surface (eg a bedside cabinet). The box costs $100 and contains twelve packets.
Sims WooHoo'ing within two tiles of the box (usually in the adjacent double bed) will automatically use a packet from the box to change the chance of pregnancy to the effectiveness of the packet.
Alternatively, Sims can be directed to take packets from the box, placing them into their inventory. Any WooHoo, for example in a bed, lift, photobooth, sauna, hottub, etc, will now use a packet from inventory to change the chance of pregnancy to the effectiveness of the packet.
After a packet is used on a livable lot (residential, apartment, dorm or greek house) an empty torn packet will appear on the ground, which after a while will start to smell!
Update: If the WooHoo occured inside AND there is a bin in the same room AND the Sim is not sloppy, no empty torn packet will be created. See also Waste Paper Basket.
By default the preventatives are 98% effective, so even with their use there is a small chance of a sim getting pregnant.
A debug menu option on the box permits the effectiveness to be set for that box. The effectiveness can be set from 100% (no chance of pregnancy) to 50% (higher than standard chance of pregnancy).
Open boxes and unused packets have a small negative impact on the environment score.
Torn packets also have a negative impact on the environment score. After three hours, torn packets begin to smell and then have a much larger negative effect on the environment score.
Disposing of a packet will dispose of all used packets and all unused packets on the floor, in the same room. Sims will go to each packet in the same room, stack them, and then dispose of the stacke with one trip to the rubbish bin.
Maids will dispose of used packets (and unused packets left on the floor) anywhere on the lot. Cleaning robots will disposed of packets left on the floor.
Neat Sims will only autonomously dispose of packets in the same room, or if outside within 6 tiles. Sims that autonomously dispose of a packet that they didn't leave may confront another Sim in the household.
A Sim that autonomously disposed of another Sim's packet may confront a Sim in the house about it (this may not be the Sim actually responsible for the discarded packet)
A Sim directed to dispose of a packet by the player will never confront a Sim, neither will a working NPC (maid, nanny, etc)
An autonomous Sim disposing of a discarded packet may confront ONE of the following Sims if they could reasonably be the only Sim that could have discarded the packet ...
- ... a room-mate; the Sim will either lecture or nag (depending on their niceness score) the roomie
- ... a teenage child; the parent will lecture the teen (severity depends on the parents niceness score)
- ... their partner (going steady, committed relationship, engaged or married) whom they will slap - their relationship score will be seriously damaged, but they will not split up (that game-play has been left for the player to decide)
- Only full boxes can be deleted/sold
- A sim can take one, four or all remaining packets from the box and put them into their personal inventory
- Sims will pick up the box to interact with it. Sims will put the box down after interacting with it, sloppy sims will always leave it open.
- Open boxes can be closed by a Sim with the Tidy menu action
- The details for a non-empty box can be displayed - remaining uses and effectiveness
- Only closed, non-empty boxes can be placed into inventory, boxes can be given as gifts
- Empty boxes can be disposed of. They can also be refilled for the original price of the box (useful if you've changed the effectiveness from the debug menu)
- Packets don't appear in the catalog, they can only be taken from boxes
- The details for a packet can be displayed - effectiveness
- Only unused packets can be placed into inventory, packets can be given as gifts!
- Packets can't be deleted/sold (use dispose menu action)
- Boxes can be opened or closed (debug menu actions), empty boxes are always closed
- The effectivness of the packets taken from a box can be set, values of 100%/98%/95%/90%/85% reduce the chance of conceiving, while values of 80%/75%/67%/50% increase the standard chance of conceiving
- All packets on the lot can be deleted and the box closed
- A packet can be set to torn/opened, and it will start to smell after an elapsed period of time
- All packets on the lot can be deleted
Configuration is via BCONs. It is assumed you know how to open the .package file with SimPE and make these kind of changes.
BCON 0x1000 "Tuning - Box" is used to configure general aspects of the box; see "Tuning - Packet"
- 0x00: 'Default Uses' is the number of packets in the box, default is 12. If you change this value you will also need to change the description in the CTSS rescource.
- 0x01: 'Default Pregnancy Chance %' is the default chance of getting pregnant while using a preventative - default is 2%. Note the details reports "effectiveness", which is 100 minus this value. The effectiveness of an individual box can be set from the debug menu.
- 0x02: 'Max Distance To Box For Auto-Use' is number of tiles woohoo'ing Sims need to be within to automatically use a packet from a box - default is 2.
- 0x03: 'Closed crapness score' is the effect on the room's environment score of a closed box - default is 0
- 0x04: 'Opened crapness score' is the effect on the room's environment score of an opened box - default is 2
BCON 0x1000 "Tuning - Packet" is used to configure general aspects of the packet; see also "Tuning - Box"
- 0x00: 'Max Stack Size' is the maximum number of packets a Sim will collect from the same room to dispose of - default is 12
- 0x01: 'Stink After X Hours' is the time after which a torn packet will begin to smell - default is 3, set to -1 to disable.
- 0x02: 'Unopened crapness score' is the effect on the room's environment score of an opened packet - default is 2
- 0x03: 'Stinky crapness score' is the effect on the room's environment score of an opened/torn box - default is 10
- 0x04: 'Base niceness score' is the base niceness score of a packet - default is -2
- 0x05: 'Max outside distance' is the number of tiles a Sim needs to be within a packet outside before they will autonomously dispose of it - default is 6
BCON 0x1001 "Graphic States" is used internally, do NOT alter, as some sections of the code use the literal values and not the associated BCON entries.
BCON 0x1002 "Tuning - Packet - Jealousy" is used to control how an autonomous Sim reacts to disposing of a discarded packet they didn't help to create.
- 0x00: 'STR Adjust' is hit to the short-term relationship score when a Sim confronts their partner about a discarded packet - default is -150
- 0x01: 'LTR Adjust' is hit to the long-term relationship score when a Sim confronts their partner about a discarded packet - default is -75
- 0x02: 'No Partner Confront' set this to a non-zero value to stop a Sim from confronting their partner about a discarded packet
- 0x03: 'No Teen Confront' set this to a non-zero value to stop a Sim from confronting their teen child about a discarded packet
- 0x04: 'No Roomie Confront' set this to a non-zero value to stop a Sim from confronting their room-mate about a discarded packet
- 0x05: 'Niceness Threshold (Teen)' is the niceness score below which a parent will strongly lecture their teen child about a discarded packet
- 0x06: 'Niceness Threshold (Roomie)' is the niceness score below which a Sim will nag their room-mate about a discarded packet
- Q) My sim just put the box down where I can't pick it up from (usually happens in apartments), how can I move it?
- A) Easiest is to direct the sim to "Take All" then "Dispose". Otherwise, direct the sim to interact with the box, while it is in their hand pause the game and move the item the box was to to an accessible place. Unpause the game and the Sim should walk the box back to the item before putting it down.
- Q) I've disabled the torn packet smell and now I can hardly see them on rugs, so they are very hard to dispose of.
- A) Take a new one from a box, place it from inventory onto the floor (or a surface) in the same room, then dispose of it. The sim will dispose of the troublesome packet(s) as well. Alternatively use the "Dispose All Loose Packets" debug menu option.
