To Analise the world slowed to a crawl, scenes flickered across her vision, like watching an early Daguerre scope.

Click. Cool, damp blackness.

The world sped up.

Analise was lying on her back on cool, damp sand. The sky above was black; a narrow band of light around the horizon. She knelt up and cracked her head on solid concrete. Her vision blurred and her ears rang. She rubbed her eyes, she was kneeling on the damp sand under the raised solid concrete slab the hut was built upon. Xavier was sprawled, face down in the sand in front of her, trying to raise himself.

She backed up a few feet, out of his immediate reach. The sound in her ears was a cacophony, verging on the point of physical pain.
