40 - Epilogue

Analise sat on the bed in her small hotel room, a bundle of bank-notes wrapped in a sheet of airline note-paper in her hand. She felt no desire to count them; there was more than enough for today and tomorrow, and that was all she needed to know. She read the letter.

My darling Annie,

Although it hurts me, I must leave you. There are loose ends which need to be tied off before we can move on afresh together.

By your own confirmation, Melissa is dead. Analise is also dead. She died last night from unexpected complications of her recent injuries. If you had missed the flight, she would have lived whatever life she could have made for herself. But you did not, so she died to let you live.

I do not know the location of your father. The PO Box you have is a 'dead box', mail sent there is destroyed unopened. If you wish, I will locate him. But he clearly does not want to be found, so it may be best to respect his wishes.

Melissa had various investments and was planning to purchase your mother's house and release her from the record company. Your mother will discover Analise had several life policies and will be able to achieve those goals.

Do not concern yourself with Xavier. If he died at the cove, he is of no importance. If he lived, you are no longer of any relevance to him and he will not concern himself with you - he does not expend energy unnecessarily.

You will ask yourself if Melissa died doing something 'good' or 'right'. I cannot answer that for you - one person's freedom fighter is another's terrorist. However, I do not doubt that Melissa believed in everything she did. But, in recent months, something was going awry.

Which brings me full circle. There are loose ends which must be cauterised.

I will return to you my love, I make you that solemn promise. Watch for the medallion.

Forever yours,

Parisa

Annie Fernandez threw open the French windows and stood on the small balcony.

It was a beautiful day; the first day of her life.
