6 - Just Good Friends?

Monday morning and Nathan was already on the bus. News of his escapade had spread around the town's teen population like wild-fire and he was playing it uber-cool, holding court on the back seat.

Helen hoped she wasn't in the story but doubted it - her car was very distinctive.

He caught her eye, but before he could do anything, she turned her back, sat right at the front and put her headphones on.

She blanked him for the rest of the day ...

... but stopped short of un-friending him.

After school, to Helen's horror, Nathan got off at her stop.

He gazed sheepishly at his feet, "You still want me to help fix that styling kit to your car?", he was almost pleading.

"I thought you were grounded for eternity."

"Nah, Kit-Kat came over after lunch on Saturday to drive us all to the pool. When Mum started to object she did that thing with her eye-brow and Mum just shut-up mid-sentence. Kit-Kat's the best."

"Yeah, she's pretty cool."

"Where's the styling kit then?"

Perhaps a friendship could be salvaged from the LBD train-wreck.

"Dinner's ready," called Helen's Mum, "enough for Nathan if he wants to stay."

"Monday", Helen said, "going to be pork chops."

"Tempting, but I'd best not give Mum any reason to worry where I am. See ya!" and with that he sauntered off.

There was a hand-addressed envelope on Helen's desk when she went up to do her homework. 'Miss Helen O'Stuart - for your after-school project', in very neat copper-plate.

She didn't recognise the writing and the only thing she did after school was play netball. Very odd.

Inside were two photocopies, one of the frontispiece of Darwin's 'On the Origin of Species', and one of the royal lineage, with Queen Victoria highlighted. Helen was extremely puzzled.

Later (while watching 'Vote Us Out Of Here We Have No Talent' with her Mum) ...

"What was in Kit-Kat's note?"

"Sorry?"

"The letter I left on your desk."

"Some photocopies."

"What's the project?"

"Sorry?"

"It read 'for your after-school project'."

"Ah ... yes ... we've got to research eminent Victorians for history ... I got Darwin."

"How's it going?"

"Mum! I'm trying to watch this!"

Now why had Kit-Kat sent her those photocopies? And, more interestingly, why had she felt the need to invent a cover story? And what after-school project was Kit-Kat referring to? The copies had no relation to netball, but Helen knew they had to be important.

Much later, while reading in bed, Helen heard footsteps on the stairs to her floor. Mum stuck her head around the door.

"You alright Hels? Just you've seemed a bit distracted these last few days."

"Everything's good Mum."

"Everything OK at school?"

"Really, it's all OK."

"Good night then"

Turning to leave she stopped and picked up the photocopy of the frontispiece.

"Interesting man, Darwin", she said, half to herself, "I had a module on his theories."

She returned the paper to Helen's desk and flicked off the light.

"Little known fact ...", she added, from the half-closed door,

"... he married his cousin."

Author's Note

Seahouses Bay (the custom 'hood where Helen, Nathan, et al play out their pixilated lives) is set firmly in England and, as such, adheres to the laws of England and Wales, where it is legal for cousins to have a relationship.

If you happen to live in a part of the world where this is not the case, you may want to stop reading here.

If your personal beliefs are contrary to this, you definitely need to stop reading now.
