Sophia-Grace woke with a scream. She'd been punished for trashing the trolls' kitchen, locked in an attic room, from which she could see Lottie, dressed for school, giggling uncontrollably, being taken away forever in a big yellow limousine. The attic door opened and the monsters came for her ...
"Morning", said Deano.
He was sat on a step directly in front of her. The events of the night crashed around her, "Oh god", she groaned, "we're doomed!"
Deano turned towards her, "Ummmm ...", he stuttered, "... you broke this in the night." He held his hand out, palm upwards, in which was her locket, the fine chain broken.
"Give that to me!", she hissed, snatching the locket. The broken chain, slithering through the loop, fell unnoticed to the floor.
Movement caught Deano's attention and he looked out the door of the bus from his vantage point on the step. "Not this one ... please not this one ...", he muttered under his breath, "... that's right ... keep going ... good."
Sophia-Grace started to sit up. "Stay down", barked Deano.
She slowly raised herself on one arm until she could peek through the window. They were parked in a compound full of school buses. Drivers were leaving from a hut, cups of tea and coffee in hand, heading for their various vehicles to start the morning school run.
Deano slipped into the driver's seat, started up the engine, and joined the queue of buses exiting the compound into the pre-rush-hour traffic.
Sophia-Grace walked down the aisle and sat at the front of the school bus. Deano glanced over at her, she had changed out of her dressing gown into a knee length skirt and blouse. She stretched her long legs over the entry steps and hooked her bare feet under the handrail below the front window.
"This side of the road."
Deano veered back into the correct lane.
They'd left the city and were travelling through rural-suburbia, an odd mix of self-contained new estates, quaint old villages visible in the distance down winding, narrow side roads and miles upon miles upon miles of farmland, punctuated by the occasional bustling farm or isolated barn.
They travelled in companionable silence for an hour, broken only by the giggles and squeals coming from back.
"Sophia-Grace", called Lottie, sidling down the aisle. Lottie whispered something to Sophia-Grace and retreated down the bus.
"We're going to have to stop", said Sophia-Grace matter-of-factly.
"Why?"
"Well, for one, while you may be able to 'point it out a window', we can't. And for two, a school bus on the road at lunchtime is not normal and will attract attention."
"Down there", she added, pointing to a side track, we can hide the bus behind that barn.
