4 - Consequences

Brian looked at the empty bay where his roster said the bus should be.

"Hey Flo", he called at a passing driver, "seen my bus?"

Flo raised her hands in the universal gesture of "No, why do you men even bother to ask such dumb ass questions" and continued on her way.

Brian, assuming Old Ted had messed-up the rosters again, got in the nearest bus and headed out on his rounds ... someone else could sort out the mess.

Celia stared down the road, Mary-Lou, Jacob and Ivan played in the grass behind her. Where was the school bus? The bus had been late twice the previous week; she was going to have to send a strongly worded email to the education department.

"Awwww! Mummmm!", squealed Mary-Lou, "Ivan's trodden in some dog poo!"

Bernadette, the care-home housekeeper, found the mess in the kitchen at 6am. She made an entry in the official incident log, as per the newly implement management initiative protocols.

She discovered the empty beds and missing bedding just after 8am, while on her round to unlock the connecting doors (a policy she strongly disagreed with, both on the grounds of safety and humanitarianism), and entered those in the incident log. Then she made herself a cup of tea and sat in her kitchen. Management didn't get in until 9:30am and she wondered what she should do. She checked the cupboards and started making a list of what was missing to enter into the official log. She stopped and ripped it up, dropping the shreds of paper into the Aga.

"God speed little ones", she said, to no one in particular, and finished her tea.

At 9:45am, the care-home management team called a crisis meeting and formed an action plan. Making sure to document all their discussions, decisions and action points as per municipal protocols. It wasn't until just before noon that anyone informed the city police to be on the lookout for four run-away children.
