27 - The Field
It was dark when Deano finally stopped, but the swearing from Sophia-Grace in the back continued for a good five minutes. The road had turned into a tree-lined lane just wide enough to drive the bus down, but that had become a pot-holed track and finally they'd driven across rutted fields, following tyre grooves in the grass. At every hole, bump or rut, more boxes had burst, contents rolling around the floor, pots banging against the wall, pans crashing to the floor. Deano, too tired to go back and help, sat in the driver's seat, door open, breathing in the sweet fresh air.
"You ... you ...", stuttered Sophia-Grace, wagging her finger under his nose, "you ... just YOU!"
Deano decided that now would be a good time to stretch his legs and work out the kinks from being behind the wheel all day. Pondering why EssGee was even more beautiful when she was angry, he headed for the lake shore.
There were a number of enclaves dotted between the trees and this side of the lake. The 'Frat Brats' had been easy to find, with their posh cars and big RVs, in an adjacent camping ground. A hand-drawn sign proclaimed the facilities to be 'THE FIELD - PRIVATE - NO ACCESS - BY INVITE ONLY'.
Deano sat on the steps of the bus in the dawn light wondered how long EssGee was going to hold the grudge when she woke. Not two hundred meters from where he'd stopped near a small stand of trees was a paved track snaking all the way back to the road. Blaming Lottie's navigation was probably not going to help.
EssGee came down the bus in her PJs, "Just what the fuck is that?", pointing at the paved track.
Deano ignored her finger, "Your friends are over there,", waving his hand in the general direction of the camp ground, "head down to the lake", pointing the way, "and skirt the shore, you can"t miss them."
"Lottie, Ona", Deano called into the back of the bus, "do we know where the breakfast things escaped to?"
"Jay!", interrupted Sophia-Grace, "Is that really you?"
Julie-Aaliyah, Jay to only her very good friends, stared blankly at the interloper.
"It's me, Soph!"
Julie-Aaliyah's blank stared turned into a look of perplexion, then suddenly realisation.
"Holy FUCK!", she screamed, "Soph! Is that really you?"
Julie-Aaliyah knew that Soph had taken her parents death really hard, but Soph had really let herself go. What was she thinking - last season's fashion paired with those shoes? Hair a disaster and not a speck of make-up!
"What has happened to you?", she continued.
