Sophia-Grace, Lottie and Ona spent most of the day in the hayloft, giggling and laughing. When Deano tried to join them, they shoo'ed him away.
"That's not fair", he whined, "you got to watch me yesterday!"
"Life's not fair, buster", retorted Sophia-Grace, "better get used to it!"
Deano retreated to another round of laughter. When they came down for lunch, he tried to sneak up the ladder, but gave up when Ona and Lottie hung onto his legs, threatening to pull both him and his trousers down.
"Look out!", called Sophia-Grace as a large flat sack, stuffed with straw, crashed off the hayloft to the ground below, almost crushing Deano as it fell. "And another!"
Another large crash, Deano dived for cover.
"One more!", crash, "and that's the last!" as a final crash echoed around the barn.
"Come on", called Sophia-Grace to Deano, "get them inside".
Two fitted onto each platform. Sophia-Grace lay down in the middle of one side and shuffled her shoulders and hips to get comfortable.
"Much better", she said.
From her recumbent position, she looked Deano straight in the eyes, "Don't know where you're sleeping though", she stated, with no trace of humour.
Sophia-Grace found Deano at the edge of the copse watching the setting sun.
"I was joking", she said, no hint of humour in her voice, "we can share that side."
"Better not", he answered, without looking at her, "it's not wide enough, one of us will roll out. And we can't risk any hospital visits."
"If you can make a thinner mattress please," he added sheepishly, "I'll sleep in the aisle."
